What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy helps restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability. This is done through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice.

Physiotherapists are regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). To use the professional titles “Physiotherapist” or “Physical Therapist”, practitioners must complete an education programme at an approved institution, and meet the criteria set out by the HCPC.

To use the Chartered Physiotherapist title, practitioners must be a full member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP).

What is Sports Therapy?

Like Physiotherapy, our Sports Therapists use multiple modalities, combined with a progressive exercise program. This is monitored every step of the way to address physical imbalances created by our posture, lifestyle and physical activities.

We use the following techniques:
  • Full postural and movement assessments
  • Muscle strength and length testing
  • Soft tissue release techniques, including Deep Tissue Massage, Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM), Dry Cupping, Dry Needling
  • Manual and assisted stretching
  • Muscle activation and strengthening techniques
Unlike Physiotherapy, "Sports Therapist" is not a regulated title. This means there is not a standard set of criteria that must be achieved to use the title. Practitioners usually follow a degree or diploma education programme, and are registered with a relevant governing body, such as the Society of Sports Therapists (SST).

At Kube Medical, we ensure our Sports Therapists have the right skills and experience to support you with your issue, and work effectively alongside the rest of our team.

What's the difference between Physiotherapy and Sports Therapy?

Physiotherapy, Physical Therapy, Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation are all physical approaches to promote, maintain and restore physical health. They use similar techniques but Physiotherapy is a degree based professional qualification and requires registration with the HCPC.

Physiotherapy and Sports Therapy are typically both appropriate for the treatment of acute and chronic conditions that impact patients' ability to participate in sport and exercise, or to achieve normal musculoskeletal function in day-to-day life.

Physiotherapist have a far broader scope of practice than Sports Therapists. In addition to the common areas of practice above, Physiotherapists' scope of practice also includes treatment of conditions with neurological, neuromusculoskeletal, cardiovascular and respiratory elements.

All our soft tissue and rehabilitation practitioners are diploma qualified Level 4 Sports and Remedial Therapists, or equivalent. They specialise in muscular pain, dysfunction and injury.

How does the experience at Kube Medical compare to Physiotherapy on the NHS?

Osteopathy and Chiropractic treatments are not currently available through the NHS in the Swindon area, though Physiotherapy and Sports Therapy appointments are. All of these are available at Kube Medical. Many of our patients feel they cannot wait for a Physiotherapy appointment on the NHS. They come and see us to get treated quickly, before the issue becomes chronic.

After an initial consultation with a Chiropractor, Osteopath, Physiotherapist or Sports Therapist, our patients benefit from a treatment plan that is tailored to their own needs, with as many and as frequent appointments as they need. This may incorporate Chiropractic, Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Sports Therapy and massage treatments.

Do Physiotherapy and Sports Therapy use massage?

Both Physiotherapy and Sports Therapy are "hands on" treatments, that may involve manual therapies, such as massage, alongside movement, exercise, education and advice. These may be done as part of Physiotherapy and Sports Therapy appointments, or with one of our massage therapists as separate appointments within a treatment plan.

  Physiotherapy drop-in clinics

If you aren't sure how Physiotherapy may help you, come to one of our free drop-in clinics.

These pain and injury management clinics are hosted by our Physiotherapist, Karlo. They offer patients an opportunity to consult about back pain and sports injuries.
