When Should You Go To A Chiropractor?

Samantha Campbell • Feb 04, 2021

Chiropractors are primary healthcare providers whereby a practitioner uses their hands to provide pain relief through a wide variety of techniques often focused around specific adjustments to a vertebrae or other joints.

Chiropractors use different kinds of techniques to treat what are mostly pain conditions affecting various parts of the body. These techniques can include:
  • Spinal manipulation
  • Massage
  • Fascial release
  • Joint mobilisation
  • Light force adjustments
  • Activator technique
  • Acupuncture
  • Electric currents
  • Sacro- Occipital techniques
  • Cranial work
Many of these techniques involve quick thrusting movements, joint manipulation, and stretching of muscles in different directions. Some will also often result in a popping sound, which is normal. These treatments should not be painful, but may sometimes cause mild discomfort. These manual therapies are also often coupled with advice on diet and lifestyle. You get the best results when receiving therapy from a trained and registered chiropractor.
There are different therapies available to those suffering pain conditions. Hence the need to know when to consider the chiropractic option. Here we will look at some of the signs that could indicate a need to visit a chiropractor.

When You Should Visit a Chiropractor

Chronic or Recurrent Pain
Chiropractic treatments have proven helpful in relieving unexplained pain in the back, shoulder, neck, and elbows. These pains should not be as a result of any advanced joint or bone diseases. The patients should ideally be in generally good health. Musculoskeletal misalignments in the joints and muscles can also be relieved with chiropractic treatment.

Headaches and migraines are another type of pain that can benefit from chiropractic treatment. They can help to improve blood flow which can deliver an improved supply of oxygen, fluids, and nutrition. Deprivation of any of these or a misalignment in the neck or spine can trigger these pains.

Limited Range of Motion
Chiropractic treatments can help to realign and improve the range of motion around your joints. If you find that you can no longer move your legs, arms, torso, or turn your head as far as you used to, it could indicate your range of motion has become limited. Treatment may help to restore your old range of motion and relieve any pains.

Accident Recovery
Accidents often result in injuries that can require much help to get a person back to their normal self. Be it a motor collision or a fall down steps, it is a good idea to consider some chiropractic treatments to help get you on the mend. More so when there are several injuries suffered and need healing.

Prolonged Seating
Many desk jobs have people seated for long hours. Besides adding to sedentary lifestyles, this habit can play havoc on your posture. It can lead to shifting or herniation of discs, neck, shoulder and back pain. A pinched nerve can also result, causing shooting pains down the legs. Chiropractic sessions can help ensure your spine functions well.

These treatments need not always be for finding relief after the fact. They can also help in preventing future problems. Even those that are highly active can become prone to sports injuries. These can benefit from non-surgical or non-medicated medical options like chiropractic treatments. Not only can they help relieve pain, but they can also reduce fatigue and ease digestive problems.

When Should You Not See a Chiropractor

Discussing chiropractic therapy with your doctor is important. Especially if they are already treating your symptoms. Some conditions are rather delicate and are not recommended for chiropractic care. These can include:
  • Bone cancer
  • Bone marrow conditions like leukaemia
  • Bone thinning conditions like osteoporosis
  • Broken bones
Those on steroids and blood-thinning medications may also be advised against such treatments. If you do go ahead to see a chiropractor without seeking other advice, be sure to provide a full medical history. They will advise you on whether or not their therapies are suitable for your case.

Tips for Your First Visit

Be sure to check that your chiropractor is registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) via their website. This authority ensures its members have received the approved standard of training and adhere to the GCC standards of practice and conduct.

On your first visit, the chiropractor will take a case history and conduct a physical exam. This will allow them to decide if the treatments they offer will be beneficial. The chiropractor will discuss treatment options with you, how they work, and what benefits you can expect.

You can then ask any questions. Do not feel pressured to make a decision immediately. You can go away to think about it and call to book the next appointment if you agree.

Know that one chiropractic treatment can result in some pain relief. But this effect is rarely permanent. Just as with many other therapies, repeated sessions are often needed to sustain the benefits derived. For mild conditions, this may last just a few weeks. More serious conditions may require more long term treatment.

If a patient does not experience any relief from their symptoms after a few sessions, another consultation should be carried out. This is an opportunity to determine if seeing another healthcare professional would be more beneficial.
