Why should I do rehab?

Samantha Campbell • 13 May 2022

Do you suffer from musculoskeletal pain? If so, you may be wondering how a multidisciplinary approach can benefit you. Here are a few reasons why rehab may be a part of the best course of action for you. The rehab element of a treatment plan is particularly important to help prevent future injury. It can also help to restore function and mobility, and reduce pain and inflammation. So if you're struggling with musculoskeletal pain, don't hesitate to seek out our multidisciplinary services. They may just be what you need to start feeling better again!

How do issues first arise?

Many of our patients come in with a recent or sudden onset of pain. Rarely is it the first incidence.

The typical situation is that they have felt a twinge or a niggle doing an activity that was part of life for them; nothing out of the ordinary or strenuous. Typically it will be sore for a few days and it goes away… or so they think!

Then a few months later it flares up again. This time, it is more painful and lasts longer. They might think about seeking care this time, but it settles to something that's an annoying niggle. However, it never quite goes away.

There are episodes where it wakes them as they turn over in bed. It is stiff and sore in the morning. It is also more of an irritation now.  They manage to dull the annoyance with painkillers.

Then one day, *BANG*! Now they are really in trouble. It hurts to move in any direction and over the counter painkillers aren't cutting it. They need time off work, and sleep? Well you can forget that!

What happens when patients come to the clinic?

Patients come to see us when they have reduced range of movement. Sometimes they have pain down their leg: Sciatica. The pain is sharp and shooting. If they have really done it well, it's like having a toothache in their leg, so intense it feels numb.

From my 16 years experience as a
Chiropractor, I can confidently say this kind of issue can be resolved in approximately 6 treatments which would take place over 3-4 weeks.  I'd expect 50% reduction in pain within the first 2-3 treatments.

Following the initial course of treatment, we schedule a review appointment. We follow the
Royal College of Chiropractors Evidence based Guidelines and review around the 6th Treatment session.

The question I ask at this stage is, “Now that we have dealt with the pain, what do you want to do now?” Patients usually respond with a blank expression, followed by the question “What do you recommend?” My answer is always to do the rehab work.

How Rehab works at Kube Medical

We have several therapists who work with our rehab patients. They will guide you through a range of specific exercises One of our Sports Therapists, Adam, who specialises in fascial release, is fabulous at rebalancing front to back and side to side. Over-tightness in just one of these planes can and does pull muscles, ligaments and joints into all kinds of compensation patterns.

The advantage to our patients is that the team works together, with our rehab team working to address specific goals. This allows our patients to get the greatest possible value out of their Chiropractic and Osteopathy treatments

Sometimes patients follow our advice, sometimes they don't.  But I can tell you the ones who will be back if they don't!

Rehabilitation is an important part of the treatment process and can help to sustain any improvements gained from Chiropractic or Osteopathy treatment. Our team of practitioners are experienced in providing rehab, so please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like more information or wish to book a consultation. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Kube Medical | Clinical Integrity

Like many businesses in healthcare, we sometimes receive feedback that is difficult to read — not because it challenges us, but because it doesn’t reflect the care and intention with which our team works every day. Recently, a negative review was shared online that has been mentioned by both current and prospective patients. While we always value constructive feedback and use it to review our processes, I wanted to take a moment — from my perspective as a non-clinical Director — to clarify how we work, and the values that guide our decisions when it comes to patient care.

As a Physiotherapist with over six years of experience working with athletes, I've encountered a pattern that’s all too familiar — the dedicated, driven sports person who finds themselves stuck in limbo after an injury. One particular case stands out, and it’s a scenario I see frequently, especially with individuals recovering from sports injuries in Swindon.

Every so often, I come across someone who’s been told, or believes, they have cervical kyphosis. It’s a term that sounds serious and often sparks fear, confusion, or a sudden identity shift: “I have a curved neck; I must be broken.” Today, I saw just that—someone on social media seeking help after self-diagnosing with cervical kyphosis.
