Restarting Recovery: A Physiotherapist’s Approach to Healing an Old Knee Injury

Pearl Doiphode • 3 May 2025

As a Physiotherapist with over six years of experience working with athletes, I've encountered a pattern that’s all too familiar — the dedicated, driven sports person who finds themselves stuck in limbo after an injury. One particular case stands out, and it’s a scenario I see frequently, especially with individuals recovering from sports injuries in Swindon.

Let me introduce you to J, a recreational footballer who loves the game as much as anything else in his life. Football isn’t just a hobby for him; it’s part of his identity. His weekends revolve around training, matchdays, team camaraderie, and his ongoing desire to improve. So when he landed awkwardly during a match last autumn and felt a sharp pain in his knee, he knew something was wrong.

He took the logical step and went straight to A&E.

The diagnosis? "Probably a meniscus issue — rest, and someone from physio should be in touch." But no one did. The swelling eventually went down, but the pain, weakness, and instability lingered. Months passed. The gym was off-limits, running was out of the question, and football felt like a distant dream.

The Emotional Strain of Waiting

By the time J walked into Kube Medical, over seven months had passed since his injury. He had finally undergone a private MRI, suggested by an Osteopath, which revealed partial ACL tear. The delay in care was incredibly frustrating — and not just physically.

For athletes, even recreationally, sport is a fundamental part of their identity. Being sidelined doesn’t only mean missing out on games; it affects your mood, energy, and confidence. For J, the inability to play football felt like losing a piece of himself. He was angry — at his body, and at a system that told him to "wait and see."

This experience is unfortunately common in the NHS system, particularly when it comes to sports injuries in the NHS system. Waiting lists are long, assessments are brief, and treatment tends to focus on advice and exercise rather than the comprehensive, multi-modal approach that can truly accelerate recovery.

The Power of a Fresh Start in Recovery

When J came to see us, we took a step back to assess the whole picture. His knee was still painful, unstable, and weak. He had tried to "push through" the pain, but it simply wasn’t improving.

We immediately created a personalized treatment plan that combined:

  • Shockwave Therapy to stimulate tissue repair and jumpstart the healing process
  • Laser Therapy to reduce pain and inflammation, while promoting circulation at a cellular level
  • Exercise-Based Rehabilitation to rebuild strength, control, and confidence in the joint

These three therapies complement each other perfectly. Shockwave therapy encourages the body to “remember” how to heal. Laser therapy calms inflammation, reduces pain, and supports cellular regeneration. And targeted rehabilitation strengthens the body, laying a solid foundation for long-term recovery. Unlike a “wait-and-see” approach, this is an active, evidence-based strategy that’s responsive to how J’s knee is progressing.

Why Early Intervention Matters

J’s progress has been promising. While he’s not yet back to full match fitness, he’s already noticing improvements — in his movement, confidence, and overall mindset. His main frustration? He wishes he’d sought help sooner.

As Physiotherapists, we know there’s no quick fix for injuries like ACL tears. However, we also know that early intervention makes a significant difference in the recovery process — reducing pain, preventing compensatory injuries, and speeding up the overall healing time.

Every week that goes by while you’re waiting to heal is another week where your body could be doing the work to repair and rebuild itself.

That’s why, at Kube Medical, we combine clinical expertise with advanced therapies to give our patients the best chance of recovery. Whether it's an old knee injury, a persistent hamstring strain, or an ongoing shoulder issue from that one gym session, we’re here to help you get back to doing what you love.

You're Not Alone in Your Recovery Journey

If you’re in Swindon and struggling with an old injury — particularly one where you've been told to “just rest it” — remember: you’re not alone, and it’s never too late to restart your recovery.

We’ve helped countless athletes — from footballers to runners, cyclists, and lifters — get back to their sport and, just as importantly, back to themselves. Through hands-on therapy, shockwave and laser treatments, and structured rehab, we’ve been able to help people find their way back to full function.

Whether you’ve already received a diagnosis or are still uncertain about what’s causing your pain, we’re here to help. You don’t need to worry about which therapist to see; you just need to be ready to take the first step.

Every so often, I come across someone who’s been told, or believes, they have cervical kyphosis. It’s a term that sounds serious and often sparks fear, confusion, or a sudden identity shift: “I have a curved neck; I must be broken.” Today, I saw just that—someone on social media seeking help after self-diagnosing with cervical kyphosis.
